Google AI Mode Hits 1 Billion Users: What It Means for Your SEO in 2026

In May 2026 Sundar Pichai stood on the I/O stage and said something that most SEO people had already felt in their analytics for months: Google AI Mode had passed one billion monthly active users. One year after launch. That is faster than Gmail, Maps or YouTube ever grew, and it happened while the classic ten blue links were still sitting right there in the same tab.

Since then the news has kept coming. A study of 50,000 commercial keywords found ads in almost a third of AI Mode answers. Semrush measured a 71% jump in AI Overviews on commercial searches. And in July Google quietly turned Search Console into a tool that also reports on your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube posts. Each of these stories got its own headlines this month, but they are really one story.

So what does a business owner or a marketing manager actually do with all this? In this post we go through the numbers that matter, explain what they mean for a normal company website, and finish with a list of practical steps for teams building digital products. Let's sink in!

What Google AI Mode is and why one billion users matter

AI Mode is the conversational tab inside Google Search. Instead of a list of pages you get a written answer, some citations, and a box that invites you to ask the next question. It started as a Labs experiment in 2025 and for many people it is now the default way to search in Chrome.

The scale is the point. Google says queries in AI Mode have more than doubled every quarter since launch. The average AI Mode query is about three times longer than a traditional search, and follow-up questions in the US grow by over 40% month to month. Roughly one in six AI Mode searches now includes an image, voice or video, and image-based searches alone were growing 40% a month in the spring.

Put simply, a very large part of your potential customers has stopped typing two-word keywords and started describing their situation in a sentence or two. A query like "crm for small logistics company that works with wix and quickbooks" is normal now. Your website either answers that kind of question or it does not appear in the conversation at all.

Ads have arrived in AI Mode, and they are not going anywhere

Text ads inside AI Mode began showing up at the end of 2025. By mid-2026 they are a regular feature. SE Ranking pulled US AI Mode results for 50,032 commercial keywords across 20 niches on 30 June 2026 and found ads in 29.45% of them. When ads did appear, 71% of the time there were two of them, not one.

The pattern by cost is the interesting part. For keywords with a CPC below $2, ads appeared in about 24% of answers. Between $2 and $10 it was 32%. Above $10 CPC, more than half of all AI Mode answers carried ads. Google is, quite logically, monetising the expensive queries first. Some categories are almost fully covered (pets at 72%) while others like healthcare stay at under 3%, probably for policy reasons.

There is one more number worth remembering. Only about 11.5% of advertiser domains were also cited as a source in the same AI Mode answer, and at URL level the overlap was under 2%. Paid and organic visibility in AI Mode are two separate games. Winning one gives you almost nothing in the other, which is a change from the old SERP where a strong page often did both.

AI Overviews are moving into commercial searches

AI Overviews, the summary box at the top of the regular results page, used to be mostly an informational thing. That is over. Semrush tracked over 600,000 US desktop keywords across ten industries between November 2025 and April 2026 and found that AI Overviews on commercial-intent searches expanded by 71%. Google Ads and AI Overviews now appear together about twice as often as a year earlier.

Finance led the way with a 231% increase in commercial queries triggering an AI Overview. Computers and electronics grew by about 108%, games by 77%. Interestingly, pure transactional queries ("buy X", "X price") went slightly down, by 5%. Google seems to be inserting AI where people are still comparing, and keeping the checkout-style queries a bit more traditional.

Keywords with an AI Overview also tend to have a higher CPC in high-value sectors: in jobs and education the average was $5.02 with an Overview against $1.51 without, in finance $4.84 against $2.14. Industries with long research phases (finance, travel, telecom) see much more commercial AI coverage than those where people decide quickly. If your sales cycle is long, this is about you.

The click problem nobody likes to talk about

Now the uncomfortable part. Semrush data from late 2025 showed that between 92% and 94% of AI Mode sessions end without a click to any external website. The average session lasts around 49 seconds, roughly double an AI Overview interaction, and most of that time is spent reading Google's text, not yours.

It is not all bad. Pages that get cited inside the AI answer receive around 120% more clicks than pages that are not cited. But even a cited page still gets about 38% fewer clicks than the same page would have got from a normal top ranking. So the honest picture for 2026 is: less traffic per query, and the traffic that remains is concentrated in the few sources the model decides to quote.

For a business site this changes what success looks like. Ranking on page one is still worth having, but the metric that matters more and more is whether you are the source Google quotes when someone asks about your category.

Search Console now watches your social and video posts

The third piece of news is smaller but it tells you where Google is going. On 7 July 2026 Google announced platform properties in Search Console. You can now add your Instagram, TikTok, X or YouTube account as a property, authorise it, and see which search terms bring people to your posts, how many impressions and clicks they get, and which posts perform best. It is rolling out gradually through the summer.

Why does Google bother? Because those posts are already showing up as answers. In the travel sector, Semrush found AI Overviews on 48% of commercial keywords, and Instagram was one of the most frequently cited sources. Google is treating a good TikTok video about a hotel as a legitimate search result, and it wants creators and brands to see that data in the same place site owners do.

For a company that has always treated social media and SEO as two different budgets, this is a nudge to stop doing that. A short video answering a customer's question is now a search asset with measurable performance.

Practical takeaways for businesses building digital products

First, rewrite key pages for multi-part questions. AI Mode queries are long and contain several decision criteria at once: price, integration, region, company size. A product page that clearly states who the product is for, what it connects to, what it costs and what it does not do is far more quotable than a page of marketing slogans. Comparison pages and honest FAQ sections built into the product site do well here.

Second, fix your entities. The model needs to be sure that your company, your product and your authors are the same thing everywhere. Consistent naming, Organization and Product schema, a proper About page and real author profiles are cheap and they matter more every quarter. On a Wix or custom site this is a one-week job, not a project.

Third, measure citations, not just rankings. Add a monthly check of whether your domain appears as a source in AI Mode and AI Overviews for your main commercial queries. Several SEO tools already report this. If you are cited, protect those pages; if you are not, look at who is and what their page has that yours lacks.

Fourth, treat social as search. Connect your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube accounts to Search Console as soon as platform properties reach your account, and give the video team the same keyword list the web team uses. A demo video with a clear spoken description of the problem it solves is now indexable content.

Fifth, budget for AI Mode ads where CPC is high. If you compete on expensive keywords, more than half of those AI answers already carry ads. Test a small campaign, and remember that the ad and the citation are separate: a paid placement does not make your page a source.

And finally, build your own conversion paths. With more sessions ending inside Google, the visits you do get must convert better. Faster pages, a working chat or call-back, clear pricing and a short form are boring things, but they decide whether a 6% click-through turns into a client.

Final notes

One billion people using Google AI Mode is not a prediction any more, it is a monthly statistic. Ads are inside the answers, AI Overviews cover a growing share of commercial searches, and Google is measuring your TikTok posts the same way it measures your homepage. None of this kills SEO, but it does move the goal. The winners will be the companies whose sites are clear enough to be quoted and whose content answers full questions instead of chasing single keywords.

If you are planning a website rebuild, a new web product or an SEO review this autumn, it is a good moment to design for that from the start rather than patch it later. Our team at Davydov Consulting is happy to look at how your site performs in AI search before you spend a single pound on ads.
