ChatGPT Ads Go Visual: What OpenAI's New Ad Format Means for Your Marketing
If you use the free version of ChatGPT in the US, you will soon notice something new while waiting for an image to generate: an ad. On 5 October OpenAI announced that it will start testing visual ads inside image generation, showing product photos and brand visuals next to the pictures users create. The test begins later this month with a limited group of advertisers.
This is not OpenAI's first step into advertising. ChatGPT ads have been running below answers in the US since February, and by late September they reached more than 60 countries. But placing visual ads inside image generation is a different thing. It moves advertising from the edge of the conversation into the creative moment itself, in front of 1.2 billion weekly users.
For business owners and marketing managers this raises very practical questions. What do these ads look like, what do they cost, and should part of your budget go there next year? Let's sink in!

What OpenAI actually announced
The announcement itself is fairly narrow. Starting later in October, a limited set of advertisers will be able to show image-based ads while ChatGPT generates pictures for users in the United States. The ads can contain product photos or brand inspiration that relates to what the person is creating, and they appear below the progress bar while the image renders.
Only people on the Free and Go plans will see them. Subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans stay ad-free, and accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 are excluded completely.
OpenAI also made three commitments. Ads will be clearly marked as advertising. They will be visually separated from the generated image, so nobody confuses a sponsored product shot with their own creation. And they will not influence what ChatGPT actually answers. That last promise is a stated policy rather than something anyone outside the company can verify, but it is the line OpenAI keeps repeating in every advertising announcement this year.
From quiet test to a real ad business in eight months
It is worth looking at how quickly this grew. The first US test of ads under ChatGPT answers started in February 2026. By late March there were over 600 advertisers on the platform. At the end of August OpenAI confirmed the ad business had passed a 1 billion dollar annualized revenue run rate, with tens of thousands of advertisers. In September the ads expanded to more than 60 countries, and now the format itself is evolving from text placements to visuals.
There is also a regulatory push behind the scenes. New European rules require OpenAI to publish a public ad library from January, which forces the company to formalize its advertising operation rather than keep it as a loose experiment.
Scale still favours the incumbents, to be fair. ChatGPT processes around 2.5 billion prompts a day, while Google handles roughly 15 billion searches. ChatGPT also shows a single ad slot, where a Google results page can carry several. But no other new advertising channel has reached a billion-dollar run rate within seven months of launch, and that is what makes marketers watch it so closely.

What ChatGPT ads cost
OpenAI has not published a rate card, but enough details have come out through advertisers to sketch the picture. Ads are sold through a second-price auction with three bidding options: per thousand impressions, per click, or conversion-optimized bidding where you still pay per click or impression.
Reported CPM levels sat around 25 to 45 dollars in spring, down from roughly 60 dollars when the auction opened. For clicks, OpenAI recommends maximum bids in the range of 3 to 5 dollars. That is not cheap traffic. It prices ChatGPT somewhere between premium social and branded search, which tells you how OpenAI positions the audience.
One honest caveat: OpenAI's own FAQ admits there are no cross-advertiser benchmarks yet. Anyone promising you reliable ROAS numbers for ChatGPT ads today is guessing.
The measurement stack is getting serious
The part of the October announcement that impressed us most was not the visual format. It was the measurement expansion that came with it. OpenAI now works with around 20 measurement tools: customer data connections through Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, attribution through AppsFlyer, Adjust, Triple Whale and others, incrementality testing with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic, and brand lift studies with Kantar and Cint. DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science are running brand safety pilots that keep ads out of emotional or sensitive conversations.
This is the infrastructure of a grown-up ad platform, not a side project. Early partner case studies point in an interesting direction too. WeightWatchers reported cost per acquisition 15.3 percent below its paid search benchmarks. Portland Leather saw 93 percent new visitors from ChatGPT campaigns, and the supplement brand Dose reported 67 percent new customer acquisition. One cross-campaign figure claims 52.7 percent of conversions happen within an hour of the impression.
Treat all of these numbers carefully. They come from the measurement partners themselves, without published methodology, and brands with bad results rarely volunteer case studies. Still, the pattern of strong new-customer share is consistent with what a genuinely new channel usually delivers.

What this means for search and your SEO
Every pound spent on ChatGPT ads is a signal about where attention has moved. People increasingly ask an assistant instead of typing a query into a search box, and advertising money always follows attention with a short delay. We saw the same sequence with Facebook ads around 2012 and TikTok ads around 2020: an early window where inventory is cheap relative to attention, then a crowded auction.
There is a second effect that matters even more for most businesses. ChatGPT shows one ad, but its answers mention products and services constantly, for free. Being the company a model recommends organically is worth more than the ad slot next to the answer. That is why answer engine optimization, structured product data and consistent brand descriptions across the web have quietly become SEO work in 2026. The ads announcement does not change that; it confirms the channel is commercially real.
Practical steps for businesses building digital products
If you sell to US consumers, especially in ecommerce or apps, it makes sense to prepare a small test budget rather than wait for the auction to get crowded. Nothing dramatic, a few thousand dollars once access opens beyond the initial advertiser group, with clear success criteria around new customer share rather than raw ROAS.
Get your measurement in order before you spend. If you already use AppsFlyer, Adjust, Triple Whale or a similar tool from OpenAI's partner list, connecting ChatGPT campaigns later will be straightforward. And start tagging AI assistant referral traffic in your analytics now, because you cannot evaluate a channel you cannot see.
Think about creative early. These placements sit next to images the user asked for, so generic stock banners will look worse there than anywhere else. Clean product photography and simple, honest visuals fit the context better than loud promo graphics.
And if you run a digital product with a free tier, watch this experiment for another reason. OpenAI is testing whether ad-supported free plans can fund an expensive service without destroying user trust. The safeguards it chose, clear labelling, separation from content, no influence on outputs, are a reasonable template for anyone adding sponsored elements to their own product.
Final notes
A test of visual ads for free US users is a small step on its own. It may change shape or quietly disappear, as experiments sometimes do. But the direction is hard to miss: in eight months ChatGPT advertising went from nothing to a billion-dollar run rate, sixty countries and a professional measurement stack, and the formats are getting richer.
Our advice is to prepare without panic. Instrument your analytics, keep your product data clean for AI assistants, and set aside a modest test budget for the moment access opens up. The companies that treated early Facebook and TikTok ads as homework rather than hype got years of cheap growth out of it. This window looks similar, and it will not stay open forever.
