ABOUT PROJECT

Millennia Books commissioned Davydov Consulting to design and develop a premium Shopify storefront that felt closer to an editorial publishing experience than a standard online shop. The brief called for a content-rich, visually refined website that could balance storytelling, merchandising, and brand-building while remaining easy to manage inside Shopify.
The implementation scope covered the homepage, catalogue and product templates, blog/news, FAQ and legal pages, customer support pages, gift card functionality, newsletter sections, account access, and responsive optimisation. The technical approach centred on a custom Shopify theme using Liquid, Shopify’s native product and collection architecture, and metafield-ready content structures for future scaling.

Strategic Context
This was not a commodity catalogue build. The brand proposition depended on creating an atmosphere of heritage, scholarship, and collectability. That meant the design system needed to feel prestigious and immersive without compromising commerce clarity.
An important creative detail in the brief was the evolution of the homepage hero. The initial concept of a statue video was reconsidered in favour of a rolling image gallery. This shift reflects a flexible creative process, where visual direction evolved without disrupting the overall structural and technical scope of the project.

Scope of Work
The homepage design required a premium hero section, a storytelling-driven layout, editorial structure, and integrated newsletter or news modules. The delivered homepage includes a rotating or image-led hero, featured products, newsletter signup, editorial and social sections, and strong, consistent branding. The result is successfully delivered, with potential for further refinement of the hero experience over time.
The shop and collection templates were expected to provide reusable catalogue structures with filtering and sorting capabilities. The live implementation includes functional catalogue pages with filters, sorting options, product cards, pricing visibility, and edition labels, all operating as intended.
Product detail pages were designed to support rich content, including multiple editions or variants, detailed descriptions, and clear purchase actions. The final implementation includes product galleries, edition indicators, pricing, descriptive content, cart functionality, and tax-related messaging, all working effectively.
Content pages such as About, Contact, FAQ, Damaged Stock, EU IOSS VAT, Gift Card, and legal templates were required as part of the ecosystem. All these pages are live, accessible, and populated, contributing to trust and operational clarity.
The blog and news system required both listing functionality and article-level content architecture. The news section is live, populated with dated entries, and supports ongoing editorial publishing.
From a CMS and admin perspective, the requirement was to provide editable sections and a maintainable content structure. The live site clearly relies on Shopify-native content entities and reusable templates, forming a scalable and manageable foundation.
Responsive design, quality assurance, and launch support were also part of the scope. The storefront is fully operational, accessible on the live Shopify domain, and performs across devices, indicating a successful launch.

Design & UX Solution
The visual system communicates a “collector’s edition” aesthetic rather than mass-market retail. Large imagery, restrained colour usage, serif-influenced typography, and generous spacing all reinforce the premium positioning.
The homepage messaging, especially the “The Home of History” statement, clearly defines the brand’s identity and audience focus. This positioning is consistent across the interface.
A unified header and footer system ensures continuity between commercial and informational pages. This is particularly important for a new publishing brand, where trust signals such as contact information, FAQs, and legal content must feel integrated rather than secondary.
The move toward an image-based hero instead of video aligns with the need for flexibility. Image galleries are easier to update, localise, and optimise, making them a more practical long-term solution for merchandising and content control.

Information Architecture
The primary navigation is structured around key user journeys, including Home, Shop, About, News, and Contact.
The footer extends this structure by providing access to customer accounts, FAQs, gift cards, damaged stock policies, VAT information, privacy policy, and terms of service.
This layered architecture supports both transactional browsing and deeper content exploration. It is also well-prepared for future expansion into more complex collections, timelines, and editorial content.

Technical Delivery
From a technical perspective, the project follows a robust Shopify custom-theme approach. The implementation uses Liquid to structure templates while relying on Shopify’s native routing for products, collections, pages, blogs, cart, and customer accounts.
The content model is designed for scalability. Products can include edition-specific attributes, collections can grow over time, and the blog system supports continuous publishing. Supporting pages provide essential legal and operational information without requiring custom backend systems.
This approach balances simplicity and scalability. It avoids unnecessary technical complexity while leaving room for future enhancements such as metafield-driven storytelling and richer product narratives.

Overall, the live Millennia Books website represents a successful first-release product. It is brand-aligned, functional, easy to manage, and commercially viable. As a portfolio project for Davydov Consulting, it clearly demonstrates the ability to translate a high-end creative vision into a structured, scalable, and fully operational Shopify storefront.
